MY UKELELE JOURNEY

IMG_5369.PNG
An Unexpected Hobby

After years of whining to my Dad about how badly I wanted to learn to play the guitar, you would think that he'd finally buy me one in the end.

Christmas 2018, my Dad told me he would finally buy me a guitar.

A little guitar.

A ukelele.

I had mixed feelings when I got my first ukelele, mainly because I've always thought they were inferior to other "real" musical instruments. I used to think ukeleles were merely toys for children. Everytime I hear someone mentioning the uke, it reminded me of this video:

Well, guess what? Those mere "toys" were harder to master than I presumed. Even after weeks of practice, I could only master 4 chords at most while strumming ever so slowly. I was what people call, a "noob".

I never gave up, though. I pushed through and through. Playing my newly bought ukelele was the first thing I would do in the morning and the last thing I'd do at night. You could say I played it so many times to the point that my whole family got irritated.

Thankfully, after a month of practice. My fingertips thickened and I was proud to admit myself as a decent ukelele player then. I could shift chords faster, pick up rhythms easier, and play while singing. Surely, to some this may not be a big deal, but I felt really happy to at least have something close to a guitar.

From then on forth, I started posting covers on Instagram. I wouldn't say that I'm the best singer out there but people claim to enjoy listening to my voice sometimes.

Practice really does make perfect. Even an expert was once a beginner so all I had to put stay patient and take my time.

Now that I crossed the sea and being away from home, my homesickness and ukelelesickness (?) are starting to kick in. Of course, I could always borrow someone else's ukelele, but somehow it doesn't please the same. I guess past videos of me and my uke will do for now.

Enjoy ✨
